Our country been through sufferings, challenges and problems but we are undefeated creating a great bond of unity and withstand. Every celebration has meaningful story behind, built strengths, reflection of sacrifices, memorable achievements and greatness of face of different heroes who fought well. Jumping to the world of reality that past centuries was really a darkness and being colonized by numerous nations. Because of the bravery, integrity, pure heart, determination, heroism and sacrifices, the declaration of Philippines’ independence is one of the most valuable, treasured and significant milestone that Filipinos achieved through our rich journey and nourished history.

According to Remitly Website, On June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo raised the Philippines flag for the first time and declared this date as Philippines Independence Day. Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa designed the flag of the Philippines, which is famous for its golden sun with eight rays. The rays symbolize the first eight Philippine provinces that fought against Spanish colonial rule. After General Aguinaldo raised the flag, the San Francisco de Malabon marching band played the Philippines national anthem, “Lupang Hinirang,” for the first time. Spain, which had ruled the Philippines since 1565, didn’t recognize General Aguinaldo’s declaration of independence. But at the end of the Spanish-American War in May 1898, Spain surrendered and gave the U.S. control of the Philippines. In 1946, the American government wanted the Philippines to become a U.S. state like Hawaii, but the Philippines became an independent country. The U.S. granted sovereignty to the Philippines on July 4, 1968, through the Treaty of Manila.

Since 1962, Philippine Independence Day has been celebrated every June 12 after President Diosdado Macapagal changed the date from July 4, the day when a treaty was made declaring the freedom of the Philippines from the United States. The move was in commemoration of the declaration of independence from the Spaniards led by Emilio Aguinaldo. July 4 was then declared as Philippine Republic Day or American-Filipino Friendship Day. Independence Day also called as “Araw ng Kasarinlan” (Day of Freedom) is an annual celebration that marks and honors Philippines independence.

As the time flies, various programs and activities are held to celebrate independence day. But I sight a voiceless and powerless nation that becomes empowered, resilient and a developing country. Achieving freedom is just like a soaring bird, having high hopes, dreams and fortune, breeze of patriotism, promotes positive outcome, uplift and enthusiasm.
